Maia, the Little Cowpoke

Maia just finished her third and final year in Mrs. Smith's Preschool choir. She has loved being in this little choir and has learned a ton. Whole note, half note, quarter note, Treble clef, bass clef - she knows it all. Thanks to Mrs. Smith and all the workers for doing such a great job with our kiddos. And all I can say is, good luck with Josie next year!

Maia had the final line of the play, which went something like, "Jesus is the real champion. Will you walk with the champion?"
One word - riveting!

Random Pics of Josie

With Maia at an age and current time where she happens to be celebrating several milestones, many of the blog's posts and pictures are naturally going to be about her.
But lest you think we never take pictures of our little Josie, I've included a few random ones here. This girl is a stinker, to say the least. I don't know that I've ever been around a more independent, obstinate child. Her strong will is something I'm constantly praying for grace and wisdom as to how to best handle. And, truthfully, sometimes I just pray it will pass!
Several weeks ago I was showing her picture to someone who doesn't know her or anything about her. The lady took one look at the picture and said, "she runs the house, I'll bet." My response was, "she tries." But the bottom line is, she's ours and we love her to pieces! There isn't a day that goes by that she doesn't make me laugh about something. And though she may bring some frustration to my life, she mostly brings joy.

Oops, got into the white out. That was fun trying to scrub that off her face!

Happy 6th Birthday Maia!

On May 18, we celebrated Maia's 6th birthday. What a blessing it has been to watch her grow and learn and mature. There are days when I think I learn as much from her as she does from me. I'm so proud to be called her momma.

In honor of Maia turning 6, here are six of her favorite things right now:

1. She LOVES anything "fancy" and would wear a dress every moment of every day if I let her.
2. She loves doing crafts, painting and drawing. She keeps asking me when we're going to have an art show to show all her work.
3. As girly as she is, she will get dirty with the best of them. She loves to plant things and tries to grow just about anything.
4. Swimming. Enough said.
5. Singing. This girl truly has a song in her heart. She sings about everything and everyone, making up words as she goes along.
6. She loves talking to her baby sister in my belly and is always wanting to feel her move.

Maia's 6th birthday

Because of weird timing and a very full month of May, Maia had two parties this year for her birthday. We did a small friend one and then a couple weeks later, had a family one.

All the fun began with her very first slumber party. We let Maia invite two friends over and she chose her sweet friends, Corinne Berry and Bethany Brock. The girls played and did crafts and laughed a lot. Somewhere in there we opened presents, had cake and slept a very small amount. Overall, we felt the first slumber milestone went very smoothly and was a huge success.
The girls must have thought so too, because the next day when I saw Bethany, she was excitedly already making plans for her own slumber party.

Our family party was hosted by Papa and Grandma. We ate cake, opened presents and best of all - swam until our hearts were content.

Maia at the end of the day, with all her loot. Thanks to everyone who gave so generously to our sweet 6 year old. We appreciate you!

At Maia's school, before each day starts, all the students and teachers meet in the gym for announcements, pledges and they also recognize those who are having a birthday. So Maia got to go up and tell her name and how old she was. Needless to say, she spoke so clearly and loudly, that she didn't really need that mic.

I made cupcakes and took them to her class that afternoon.

AWANA Olympics

Maia just completed her third year in AWANA and she has loved it. We're so grateful our church has this program and our continual prayer is that she will remember the scriptures she has memorized and always try to apply them to her life.
This group isthe Sparks (K-2nd) and they really just play games and have fun in their olympics. Maia's group didn't fare too well, but it was so funny watching them, it was great. The bigger kids got 1st place.

Not sure what kind of game face this is...

Locks of Love

Earlier this year, Maia began telling me she wanted her hair cut short like when she was younger. I've never been attached to hair, so my feeling of reluctance caught me by surprise. But, it's her hair, and within reason, she can do what she wants. I kept telling her to continue to think about it, because I wanted to make sure she knew what she was asking for. I mentioned donating her hair to Locks of Love, showing her pictures online and explaining what they did. That was the final sale for her. This girl has a very compassionate heart and so that next week, I finally consented and cut 9+ inches off her hair.
Of course it looked so cute and we all loved it. Now, fast forward 5 months, she's already decided she wants to grow her hair back out. But she has wonderful hair and my prayer is she will continue to want to grow, cut, and donate. Grow, cut, and donate. Something of that nature.

Spring Break 2011

Yes, you read the post title correctly. I know Spring Break was in March. Just roll with it.
Leaving town was not in the cards for us this year (nor has it ever been by the way). So the girls and I just made the most of it here. We mostly just stayed up late and slept late and took it easy. But here are some pictures of the girls getting pampered and playing a bit.

Josie gets her first mani/pedi. Life is tough when you're 2 1/2.

Look how the toe separators are as big as her toes! So cute!

We also stopped by the Children's Museum. Which despite living in a smallish town, is actually a very good one. My girls certainly don't know any difference and they had a blast.

Playing a little mini golf

Pretending to work at Burger King. Let's hope they strive for more as they get older.

And grocery shopping. The things that are fun to children... :)

A Valentine Surprise

Well first let me say that I have tried about a dozen times to upload video for this post. Each time to no avail, which is beyond frustrating. However, I was able to grab a few stills from the video, and get those uploaded - hence the poor picture quality. So for that I apologize! I'm going to keep trying to get the video uploaded because it is hilarious! I'm talking America's Funniest Home Videos funny. Anyway... If you've been following our blog for a while, you may remember a post title similar to this one called, Maia's Christmas Surprise. There were pictures of Maia wearing this cute shirt that read, "I'm the BIG Sister." Which was how we announced the upcoming arrival of a new baby. In these pictures, Josie is wearing the shirt now. You probably don't have to be a genius to figure out what that means! On Valentine's night, we told the girls that I was going to be having another baby. Josie was in her own world of course, but Maia was beyond thrilled. Maia thinks its fun when I point out clothes that once belonged to her, that Josie now wears. So here I'm telling her, "this used to be your shirt and you wore it when we found out you were going to be a big sister because there was a baby in my belly." Here is Josie announcing, "I've got a baby in my belly." The news is finally sinking in with Maia. Maia proclaiming, "This is going to be the coolest house ever!" I think Maia may have meant this would be the craziest house ever. That's certainly how it feels some days, but that's what makes it interesting. Was this planned? I admit I have asked this question myself, a time or two. But now that I feel like I'm being asked that by every other person, I find it sort of odd. But nevertheless, the answer is no and yes. To be totally honest, another child was not something that was in our immediate plans. We had talked about it several times and my desire was to have more children. Robert went back and forth but usually leaned toward the side of not having more kids. But, regardless of where each of us stood, we'd agreed that due to everything going on in our lives at the moment (namely, the never ending process of adding on to our home and Rob finishing some architectural testing), that it would be best to wait. The Lord had other plans... Despite our precautions, I got pregnant. So even though the reality of adding another person to our family took some getting used to, I trust fully in God's providence in our lives and know that ultimately this child was planned by Him. And that gives me peace. Sovereign Lord, thank You for loaning us and trusting us with another one of Your creations. Guide us with each step we take, so that we may never loose our footing as we continue training these children in Your ways. Please let our lives - as a family unit and individually - bring You alone glory.
